The result is that when visitors arrive at Avignon, the first thing they do is rush to the bridge to see if it really exists ... and it does exist of course. The Rhone currents hal defied bridging until Sain, Benezet and his disciples built this one in 1177-88. It was broken several times several times and in 1680 it was abandoned completely. Four arches still reach out from the banks of the river and Romanesque St. Nicholas Chapel is still perched on the second pier. People did dance there, as in the song, but not on it but underneath it, on the Ile de la Barthelasse. |
