Le Mont-ventoux : descriptionWith an altitude of 1909 meters, the Mont-ventoux, also called the "Giant of Provence", can be seen yom far afield. In all seasons, because of the bare limestone that crowns the mountain, it often looks as if the top of the mountain is covered with snow. No matter how barren the mountain may be, Mont Ventoux serves several purposes - it has been frequented since the Antiquity as a spiritual place; Saint Anne chapel was built in the 15th century; there is a meteorologicalobservatory, a telecommunications relay ...
Various sports events are organised on the slopes of the mountain - automobile hill climbs (the first hill climb was in 1902; the best drivers in the world, among whom Ettore Bugatti, entered the race), cycle races (it is a well known ascent of the Tour de France... a lot of bycicles can be seen near its slopes) ... During the winter season, it is a skiing resort (Mont Serein resort, on the north facing side of the mountain peak); all the year round is a well known beauty spot with spectacular landscapes and an ideal location for hill walking.
Among the writers who have described the mountain peak (Rene Char describes it as an ''eagles mirror"). Petrarques prose is the best known. In a descriptive of his ascent of the mountain, he compares the strenuousness of his climb with the path one climbs in order to reach perfection of the soul... Before such considerations, the writer describes the landscapes and expresses above all his surprise: "surprised by the strange lightness of the air and the vastness of the scene, I remained motionless as if I had been stricken by astonishment" ... |
