Le Pont du Gard : descriptionThe Pont du Gard (The bridge of Gard) is a very famous ancient Roman aqueduct bridge in southern France. A true masterpiece of an aqueduct, 50-kilometres long, which fed waters to the thermal baths and fountains of Nîmes during the apogee of its Roman period. The bridge of Gard was registered in 1840 on the first list of historic monuments classified in France and, since 1985, on the World Heritage list of Unesco. At the outflow of the Gardon gorges, this majestic and imposing structure is a testament to the formidable technical mastery of the Roman engineers.
Recent improvements to the site of Pont du Gard enable visitors to discover the history of this monument, anchored within a marvellous natural setting. |
