Les santons de Provence : descriptionSantons of Provence - Christmas holiday season is a great time to discover an old tradition of Provence : "Santons" - Small figurines representing the nativity scene, also named santous or santoùos in Provençal, meaning "little saints".
The tiny colorful world of santons. Santons are small hand-painted, terracotta nativity scene figurines produced in the Provence region. In a traditional Provençal crèche, there are 55 individual figures representing various characters from Provençal traditionnal village life such as the scissors grinder, the shepherd, the fishwife, the blind man, and the chestnut selle.
In all catholic houses in france you can find santons for the "crèche" - You will find a lot of santons in market or souvenirs shops in Provence. The first santons were created by Marseillais artisan Jean-Louis Lagnel. A lot of workshops exists in Marseille, Arles, Aix en Provence... |
