The lavander is a well know plant... whith a great smell and color : almost the symbol of Provence...
Anyone that knows anything about lavender can tell the difference between wild lavender and its hybrid or lavandin as it is known locally : lavender grows between altitudes of 600 m and 1,400 m and has a low yield per hectare. While lavandin is a bigger plant that can be cultivated in the plains with a much higher yield.
Lavender oil is very much sought after by perfumers and lavandin oil goes into the making of many consumer products (soap, washing powders, etc...) For economic reasons, Vaucluse produces a lot more lavandin than lavender.
The two plants are, however, distilled in the same way and the delightful colour of the two types of lavender look the same from a distance. |
