No, not Amsterdam, but Provence!
In a town called Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, literally, "island on the (river) Sorgue".
This was our first stop on the day that we did a driving tour of some towns and villages in the Luberon. When I knew we were going to Provence, I started reading Peter Mayle's A Year in Provence. (The book is set in the Luberon.) This, together with effusive guide book references to the Luberon along the lines of "quintessential rural Provence", sealed the deal. By this point, we'd already spent several days exploring larger Provencal towns such as Avignon and Arles. While we loved these towns, they seemed too, well, chic to fit the idea of sleepy, countryside towns which (in my head!) epitomised Provence.
