Fontaine de Vaucluse (84) : presentation
The spring of the Sorgue river is a mystery to geologists and geographers alike since it has not yet been established where the water from this re-emergence comes from or why the rate of flow is so regular. Vaucluse departement was named after the spring. Indeed; after the Fontaine de Vaucluse village, the river flows into a closed valley or vallis clausa, a name which eventualy turned into Vaucluse, the name of both the village and the departement. On the banks of the Sorgue river, in Fontaine de Vaucluse, there were a lot of paper mills at one time but these mills have all gone now. The Italian scholar, poet, and humanist Petrarch (1304-1374) moved to Avignon to get away from the black Guelphs. |
