Le Barroux (84) : presentation
Perched on a rock, a massive "chateau" looks over the village. This feudal fortress underwent alterations during the Renaissance but then it was fought over during the wars of religion and eventually taken over by the Protestants. The chateau of Le barroux was abandoned subsequently and it gradually crumbled until 1929 when it was bought privately and restored. In 1944, retreating German troops ransacked the chateau before setting fire to it. The chateau has now been restored once more. Besides the chateau, Le Barroux has some remarkably beautiful narrow streets that lead up to Saint-Jean-Baptiste church (topped with a sober bell tower). The splendid view of the surrounding vineyards, the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux add to the charm of the village "Le Barroux". |
