Beaumes de Venise (84) : presentation
The name of this delightful village comes from the Provencal word "baume" which means cave, and "Venaissin" which in the course of time became Venise. The Beaumes de- Venise Muscat wine produced in the area is, with the Malaga Muscat and Frontigan Muscat wines, one the best known wines of its type in the world.
At the top of the village of Baumes de Venise there is a feudal castle. It is now in ruins but during the Middle Ages the village was one of the more powerful and influential fortified bastions of the Comtat. In the 19th century Saint Pierre church in the centre of the village, there is a chasuble given by Anne of Austria, mother of Louis XIV, on the occasion of her visit to Provence. |
