Saintes-Maries de la Mer, on the coast of Camargue (France), is where both Mary mother of God and Mary Magdalena are supposed to have landed after crossing the sea by boat from Palestine. They are further supposed to have married into local nobility, which created a mighty line of local counts and provides some of the background for the plot in the Da Vinci Code. The fact that there are about 800 years between the birth of christianity and those Provence counts does not sem to matter at all
It it the seat of a huge yearly pilgrimage by gypsies.
