If I told you that we witnessed bull games in St Remy-de-Provence, you would immediately say but that is in France not Spain. I would too. But having visited that part of Europe a few times now, I can assure you that, around the Mediterranean the cultures transcend borders. We found ourselves trapped, literally - the town was barricaded up, in the picturesque little town of St Remy during the annual bull festival. Little did we know at the start of the day that the festivities actually meant that the bulls would be let loose to run through the streets of St Remy, while the townsfolk prodded them from atop their steeds, galloping along the not so wide boulevards. During the course of the day, we had several encounters with the bulls and the horses. It soon became quite apparent that the festivities also involved letting the bull chase a few hundred locals and tourists around the main square. All this happened with a spectacular band playing traditional music live in the background. Though we were a little concerned about health and safety, some fantastic photo opportunities were to be had. I was practically a fraction of a second away from being trod underfoot every time I positioned myself in front of the charging battalion. All that was an experience to savour and I was also relieved to learn that the bulls were not harmed in any way - in fact they took the pride of place at this event.
