The construction of the castle was started in 1401 by Louis II Duke of Anjou, after the previous fortress on the site was destroyed. Both his sons continued their father's work, but when it was completed in 1449 by his second son, René I King of Naples the castle became known as le château du roi René ("King René's castle").
